Monitoring Log Instructions

Below these instructions is a table where we will continually update throughout the semester. The responsibility varies in regards to whom will record these values and insert them into the table.
Edit this post to add your data when it is collected. In addition, write a short followup blog post describing the state of the columns and the experiment.

Measurements

Measure each of the layers in the Winogradsky column

• Depth of each layer (cm), measured from bottom of column
• Layer thickness (cm)
• Layer description

Observations

• Is there evidence of new layers in the column?
• If so, what type of organism do you hypothesize that it is? (refer to list below)
• Cyanobacteria
• Purple sulfur bacteria
• Sulfur-reducing bacteria
• Iron-oxidizing bacteria
• Aerobic heterotrophs
• Eukaryotes

Photograph/Measurements Schedule

Photos are to be taken straight on, with columns remaining in the windowsill. The salinity should be clearly seen in the photographs. This will allow for the light casting in to help clarify the stratification.
